Madrid Fine Arts Institute in collaboration with American Friends of the Prado Museum, offers two intensive english speaking art immersion courses at the Prado Museum, July 2018. Level 1 for High School students, and Level 2 for University students and young professionals.


Level 1  (July 1st-15th 2018)

Course for highly motivated art-minded High School students who want to develop their college portfolio and have completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade by summer 2018.

Level 2  (July 15th-29th 2018)

Course for University Students and Professionals to learn and draw from the masters and expand their artistic vision through an intensive study of the great artists of the Prado Museum and visits to Madrid´s top cultural and historical sites.


At both Levels you will:

  • Discover the greatest artists of Western Art such as Bosch, El Greco, Titian, Velazquez, Rubens, Goya, Picasso, Dalí and Miro.
  • Learn Art and Spanish History through the Prado Museum masterpieces.
  • Relish an exclusive private visit to the Prado Museum before opening hours.
  • Improve your drawing and observation skills at the Prado Museum.
  • Enjoy personalized drawing classes adapted to the level of each participant.
  • Get basic drawing materials for the course: Pencils, erasers, a sketchbook and a portfolio to save your drawings.
  • Stimulate your creativity developing a personal artistic project.
  • Become more digitally savvy learning how to design your own website to make state-of-the-art presentations of your ideas.
  • Explore Madrid´s most important Museums, historical sites and neighborhoods.
  • Travel back in time to Medieval Spain visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Toledo and Segovia.
  • Benefit from a yearlong membership to American Friends of the Prado Museum.
  • Receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course.

The seminars on Spanish History, Art History at the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen Museums and The great Masters of the Prado Museum, are taught by Art Historians and Artists through experiential learning, discussion, multimedia instruction and museum visits.


The drawing classes are focused on direct observation and gesture drawing. Individualized teaching through demonstration and visual instruction. The Introduction to Web Design will train students to create state of the art presentations of their work and ideas. As a Final Project, which will be presented individually at the end of the program, students will create an artistic work based on the Prado Masterpices.


Complementary to the History and Art seminars and to illustrate the concepts taught in the classroom, students will explore Madrid´s diverse artistic and historical cultural patrimony, and enjoy excursions to dreamlike Unesco World Heritage Sites such as Toledo, El Escorial and Segovia, where they will also visit the Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso.

MFAI is the ideal study abroad program for students who wish to become immersed in a memorable learning experience with access to world class art museum collections.

The Seminars will be held in the classroom and at the Prado Museum.

  • The Great Masters of the Prado Museum (12 hours) Dutch and German Schools, Italian Renaissance, Spanish Golden Age, Goya and the 19th Century.
  • Introduction to Spanish History  (6 hours) Prehistory to Al-andalus, Modern and Contemporary Spain.
  • Art history at the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen Museums (8 hours)

The workshops will be held in the studio and at the Prado Museum

  • The language of Drawing (14 hours) Direct Observation making emphasis on gesture drawing. Drawing practice in the studio and at the Prado Museum.
  • Introduction to Web Design  (5 hours) Art and Technology , Digital competencies for Artists, Web Design.
  • Final Project (8 hours) Students will create work relating the Art of the past to their own vision and creativity and will present it digitally.

The program includes guided visits to discover Madrid’s Cultural Patrimony.

  • Madrid Walking tours: Retiro Park, Gran Vía, Plaza Mayor, Barrio de las Letras, La Latina, The Royal Palace and visit contemporary Art Galleries.
  • The Thyssen Museum made up by the most important Art collection in the world. The Reina Sofia Museum home of Picasso’s Guernica. The Archeological Museum where students will find footprints of the different cultures that have shaped Spanish history.
  • Monastery and site of El Escorial. The retreat of the Mystic King Philip II became the center of  the greatest empire of the time. An empire on which the Sun never sets which included territories in Asia, America and Europe.

The program includes visits to Toledo and Segovia, world heritage sites located outside of Madrid.

  • Toledo is known as the city of the three cultures, Muslim, Cristian and Jewish. It is also the city where El Greco lived and produced most of his work.
  • Segovia is a Medieval city famous for it’s magnificent Roman Aqueduct, It’s Gothic Cathedral and the majestic Palace where Queen Isabella the Catholic, spouse of King Ferdinand of Aragon and sponsor of Christopher Columbus, was crowned in 1474.
  • The Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso is an impressive Baroque palace and former summer residence of the King of Spain from the 1720’s. The Palace is surrounded by extensive gardens and sculptural fountains recreating the grandeur of Versailles.

Students will enjoy full room and board and an individual room equipped with cable internet, individual bathroom and phone at Agustinus Nebrija Residence Hall, in Madrid.

The Residence Hall has 24-hour access security and camera surveillance. An MFAI staff member will always be physically present at the Residence Hall to help, assist and accompany the students.

The common areas have Wi-Fi, game and TV rooms, chill out, Gym, cafeteria, ping-pong area, library, study and work rooms, computers and laundry room.
